A sharp decline in traffic mortality was seen between 2000 and 2010. This was mainly because fewer people died in car accidents. In 2024, 220 passenger car occupants were killed in accidents, compared with 543 in the year 2000.
The number of deaths due to collisions involving cars has averaged 213 per year over the past ten years.
Since 2022, most road traffic fatalities were cyclists
A total of 246 cyclists were killed in traffic accidents in 2024. The number fell by 24 relative to 2023, but rose compared to the years between 2000 and 2022. In the same period, an average of 199 cyclists died in traffic accidents.
At least 44 percent of cyclists who died were riding an electric bicycle. In 60 percent of cases involving cyclist fatalities, a head injury was the main cause of death.
Number of road traffic fatalities involving mopeds at an all-time low
The number of people who died in a traffic accident riding a moped, motorised scooter or light moped was the lowest in 25 years. In 2024, 30 people were killed in traffic due to accidents involving a motorised scooter or light moped. In the year 2000, the number was 104.
A total of 59 pedestrians, 57 people using mobility scooters, 56 motorcyclists and 6 occupants of delivery vans or lorries died in traffic accidents in 2024.
Highest number of traffic deaths among elderly people
Traffic mortality has declined over the last 25 years in all age groups below 80 years, even when population growth and ageing are taken into account.
The sharpest decline in road traffic fatalities was seen among young people aged under 30. The number stood at 453 in 2000, and at 152 in 2024. This drop was mainly because young people are less likely to be involved in accidents as occupants of passenger cars or as riders of mopeds.
Traffic mortality among people aged 80 or older in 2024 is the highest of all age groups, followed by people aged 70-79. In 2000, most victims were younger than 30. In relative terms, road traffic fatalities aged 60 years and over were likely to be involved in a bicycle accident, while younger victims (aged below 60) were more likely to be killed in a car accident.

4 in 10 cyclists died in collisions with cars
Between 2020 and 2024, an average of 42 percent of cyclists died in traffic accidents due to a collision with a passenger car or delivery van. Thirty-one percent died due to a fall or another type of accident that did not involve other road users or a fixed object, such as a bollard. Among cyclists aged 70 or older who died in accidents, 36 percent had not been involved in a collision.
Forty-three percent of traffic deaths among passenger car occupants was caused by a collision with another passenger car, delivery van, lorry or bus, and 40 percent was caused by a collision with a fixed object. That was 56 percent among young people aged between 20 and 30 during the same period.
Half of the victims aged 30 years or older died in a collision with a passenger car, delivery van, lorry or bus. Among pedestrians killed in traffic, a passenger car or delivery van was involved in three-quarters of the cases.
