Retail turnover up by over 2 percent in May

Statistics Netherlands (CBS) reports that retail turnover was 2.2 percent higher in May 2025 than in May 2024. Sales volume was down by 0.4 percent. Turnover in the non-food sector (including retail not in shops) increased by 2.5 percent, and turnover in the food sector (shops selling food, beverages and tobacco) increased by 1.7 percent. Meanwhile, online retail turnover increased by 4.7 percent year-on-year.

The figures for retail turnover have been adjusted for calendar days in May, because more is sold on certain days of the week than on other days. Without such an adjustment, retail turnover in May 2025 would have been 2.4 percent higher than one year previously.

Turnover in non-food sector up by 2.5 percent

Turnover in the non-food sector was up by 2.5 percent in May, year-on-year. Sales volume (turnover adjusted for price changes) was up by 0.9 percent on May 2024.

Shops selling recreational goods, chemists, shops selling home furnishings and those selling DIY products (including kitchens and flooring) saw year-on-year turnover growth in May. Clothes shops, shops selling footwear and leather products and those selling consumer electronics and white goods recorded a decrease in turnover, however.

Turnover in food sector up by almost 2 percent

Turnover in shops selling food, beverages and tobacco was up by 1.7 percent in May, year-on-year. Sales volume was 3.2 percent lower. Turnover in supermarkets was up by 1.4 percent, and turnover in specialty shops was up by 3.6 percent.

Online turnover nearly 5 percent higher

Turnover among online retailers was up by 4.7 percent in May, year-on-year. Online retailers (whose core activity is selling goods and services over the internet) recorded an increase in turnover of 8.7 percent. On the other hand, multi-channel retailers (retailers selling goods and services over the internet as a secondary activity) saw a 0.7 percent decrease in their online sales.

Online turnover for food and personal care products, for consumer electronics and for other non-food products was higher in May 2025 than it was one year previously. Online turnover for clothing and fashion items was lower.
